Anticipated transient extraction behaviours of Pu and U have been studied with the solvent extraction simulation code, ESSCAR to understand the effect of process parameters in solvent extraction cycles in current large-scale reprocessing plants. In this paper the analytical results of transient extraction behaviors of Pu and U in the 1st extraction cycle in PUREX process are mainly described under abnormal conditions of flow rates of organic solvent (30% TBP/nDD), dissolver solution, and scrubbing solution. The concentrations of Pu and U decreased rapidly after the recovery of flow rate. The earlier a recovery procedure was taken after an upset, the more rapidly normal concentration profiles were recovered. The recovery procedure manuals should be prepared for unexpected troubles or transient behaviors for appropriate measures without delay.
